Dyslexia, and the issues it raises in the classroom were featured in an innovative and edgy Wellington art exhibition which turned schoolbags into powerful statements of difference. ‘dislec sick?’, held at the Bowen Galleries in May 2009, aimed to reflect the attitudes of New Zealand educators, parents towards specific learning differences such as dyslexia.
The exhibition was proudly sponsored by Cookie Time Charitable Trust, also principal sponsor of the DFNZ, with support from Muddy Water Winery. A compellingly honest exhibition – featuring 18 transparent school bags containing statements made by educators, parents and students – ‘dislec sick?’ showcased the injustice and humiliation students with learning difficulties are at times subject to within the New Zealand education system. The statements used in the artwork were obtained from the artists’ personal experiences, as well as from an education psychologist, and offer valuable insights into the lives of those affected by learning difficulties.
Mother and daughter artists Rosie and Elizabeth White teamed up to produce this special exhibition which echoed their own family’s struggles with dyslexia. Rosie, a practicing artist who uses textiles and fibre as her media, has four children, three of whom have been diagnosed with Specific Learning Difficulties. Elizabeth, who struggled with dyslexia throughout her school years, is now in her third year studying Spatial Design at Massey University, and is currently maintaining an A average.
